Passing of Jack McGinley
The Irish Labour History Society is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of stalwart of the Society and of labour history Jack McGinley on Monday 25th November 2024.
Jack served two terms as President of the Society (2001-2004, 2014-2020), along with assuming the role of Treasurer and committee member. He was a Trustee of the Society at the time of his passing. He played a central role in the Irish Labour History Society (ILHS) over many years and is a huge loss.
The photograph below (by Dara Mac Dónaill) was taken at the Society premises in Beggars Bush in the Summer of 2023 for a feature in The Irish Times, in advance of the 2nd International Conference of the ILHS “Visions of Labour and Class in Ireland and Europe” that Jack expertly co-ordinated.
As publisher and founder of Umiskin Press, Jack made a further huge contribution to the study of Irish Labour and workers with the publication of many important titles. The launch of the most recent Umiskin Press title “Larkin’s Union” due to take place in Liberty Hall this Thursday has understandably been cancelled due to this tragic news.
The Irish Labour History Society express our deepest sympathies to Jack’s wife Helen and many friends.
A more comprehensive tribute to Jack will appear in due course.
