Irish Women Workers Union Banner Now On Public Display Following Conservation
The Irish Labour History Society is delighted to announce that a historic banner of the Irish Women Workers Union is now on public display in a museum standard display case at the Society premises in Beggars Bush, Dublin. This display case, delivered to the Society by Irish company DARAC, was funded through the Community Heritage Grants Scheme of the Heritage Council. The display case will assist the long-term conservation of this unique banner, along with ensuring that it is widely available to members of the public.
The banner was commissioned by the Irish Women Workers Union around 1919, with Evelyn Gleeson, director of the Dun Emer Guild, involved in its production. Following detailed conservation work by professional conservator Rachel Phelan in 2023, also funded through the Heritage Council’s Community Heritage Grants Scheme, the Society was keen to ensure the long-term conservation of the banner while maintaining public access. Further information on the banner itself, along with the conservation work undertaken by available here
The Society would like to gratefully acknowledge the support and assistance of the Heritage Council, Dublin City Council Heritage Officer Charles Duggan, conservator Rachel Phelan, supplier DARAC and museum professional and members of the Society Paul Doyle in this project.
