Donation of Castlecomer Revolutionary Workers Group Banner

6th April 2025

Members of the Irish Labour History Society were delighted to receive a donation in March 2024 of the Castlecomer, County Kilkenny banner of the Revolutionary Workers Groups, (RWG) which dates from around 1931. The banner was discovered at the bottom of a cupboard over eighty years later and the donation was suggested by Anne Boran, a daughter of RWG leader, Nicholas (Nixie) Boran and was delivered to the Society by his granddaughter, Deirdre Culbert. The Society is getting professional advice on the best method to preserve the banner.

The current Chair of the Fórsa Retired Members Association, Martin Bridgeman, made a documentary on the Castlecomer miners and their community for the KCLR Radio Station. It was broadcast in 2019 to mark the 50th anniversary of the closure of the mine. It can be accessed from the following link.
