Labour Bibliography

The select bibliography below develops that which appeared in Francis Devine & John B. Smethurst, Historical Directory of Trade Unions in Ireland, (Irish Labour History Society/Working Class Movement Library, Dublin/Salford, 2017), pp.563-588. It primarily features histories of Irish trade unions but also includes some histories of British-based unions operating in Ireland. Some make extensive reference to their Irish operation but most include only passing references. The main sources consulted here are the annual bibliographies contained in Saothar, Journal of the Irish Labour History Society. For further detail, see An Index to Saothar, Journal of the Irish Labour History Society, and Other ILHS Publications, 1973-2000.

Additionally, many local history societies, often with a relationship with local authorities, can be a fruitful source for students of Labour History. A particularly useful source is the long running journal of the Tipperary Historical Society. The bibliographical list contains examples of articles of general interest to Labour found in the Tipperary Historical Journal
