March of Irish Postal Workers Strike with banners September 1922

Postal Union Strike 1922

A selection of material from the Post Office Workers Union records held in the Society Collections relating to the seminal 1922 Postal Strike. The support of the Communications Workers Union and Dublin City Library & Archives in making these available is much appreciated.

Reports of shootings

While military harassment and threats were common during the strike, and detailled in reports from all local branches there were specific shooting incidents which generated extra documentation and specific complaints to the Free State Army. Comment is also made on the press coverage these incidents received. These incidents include shooting at strikers in Crown Alley on the first day of the strike and the wounding of a Miss Olive Flood on September 17th.
